2019 Texas Legislative Session Announcement

The Texas Legislature is going to be in session in 2019 – starting just after the new year on January 8th.  Physical therapists across the state will be actively participating throughout the session – working to support House Bill 29, filed by Representative Ina Minjarez of San Antonio.  This piece of legislation would eliminate the requirement to obtain a referral (prescription) for physical therapy prior to accessing care.  Symmetry feels strongly that it should be the right of all Texas citizens to go directly to any health care provider that they choose.  This legislation would allow anyone to see their physical therapist at any time for treatment of musculoskeletal conditions that affect their movement, daily function, and in many cases the ability to actively participate in normal work and social activities.

It is not too early to contact your representative to ask that they support House Bill 29.  You could also ask them to contact Representative Minjarez’s office to ask to be a co-sponsor of the bill. The more co-sponsors that sign on, the greater the momentum will be to pass this legislation.  (Click here to find out who represents you in the Texas Legislature and for their contact information.)

It is hoped that a companion Senate Bill will be filed soon.  We will be providing updates as further information develops.  Watch for additional newsletter content on this topic over the next couple of months.
