Safe Summer Exercise

Summer is officially descending on Central Texas, and it is bringing rising temperatures. This is the time of year where cold AC is a valuable commodity as some people actively avoid the scorching temperatures outside completely. Although the temperature outside can definitely feel limiting, there are some strategies and considerations that can still make being able to participate in all of the great summer outdoor activities a safe and fun experience. Check out some of the suggestions below to be prepared and make the most of your summertime activities. Be safe and have a good time!

  1. Stay Hydrated– Proper water intake is an important year-round consideration when exercising, but takes on a whole new level during the high temperatures of summer. Drinking water throughout the day and having plenty in supply for when you will be active outdoors is an absolute essential to avoid heat exhaustion and other complications that can come on quickly with dehydration and rising temperatures.
  2. Use Sunscreen– The summer sun brings thoughts of days at the pool or out on the lake, as water activity can be a great way to help manage the heat. Just make sure you are packing plenty of sunscreen to cover up exposed skin areas to avoid sunburn. Sunburn can increase risk of dehydration and heat stroke and is also linked to the development of skin cancer.
  3. Wear Protective Clothing– Summer is a great time to evaluate the wardrobe and make sure there are some appropriate options to protect your body as you stay active outdoors. Loose, light colored and moisture wicking exercising gear can make a huge difference in allowing sweat to evaporate and keep you as cool as possible in the heat.
  4. Plan Ahead– Time of day is a big consideration during the summer. When possible, avoid being active or exercising outdoors during the peak temperature hours of the afternoon. Instead, plan on getting an early start in the morning or waiting for the late afternoon or evening hours. The increased daylight hours of the summer allow for greater flexibility in timing your activity, so take advantage of the extra time.
  5. Keep Shaded– Getting out of the direct sunlight can help the body to regulate its internal temperature better. Going for a run during the day? Try to choose a trail or route that provides tree shade along the path. Planning on spending your days out at sports complexes during kids’ activities? Consider purchasing a mobile shade canopy and bring your shade with you to set up a base camp.
  6. Consider Indoor Alternatives– Summer is a great time to explore some indoor activities to give the body an occasional break from the outdoor temperatures. Consider finding an exercise class, playing some indoor sports, or trying out a new hobby that can offer an active alternative to constantly battling the outdoor heat index.
  7. Be Body Aware– Being active in the heat can result in quick changes in the body’s tolerance to the elements. Being aware of the cues of oncoming fatigue or dehydration is important. Be aware of your limitations and don’t push yourself beyond a point that compromises safety. Knowledge and preparedness is key to being able to enjoy a safe and active summer.
