Rock Climbing Injury Prevention at Austin Bouldering Project
Sunday, August 26th – 10:30-Noon
Lily Swann, PT, DPT will be leading a 1.5-hour seminar covering various exercises and stretches that will help reduce the risk of injury for rock climbers. This seminar is appropriate for climbers of all levels. Topics will include:
- Appropriate posture and muscles that need to be strengthened or lengthened in order to maintain good body alignment.
- Target exercises for muscles that are frequently weak for climbers.
- Specific stretches that can increase functional range of motion and reduce risk of injury while climbing.
- What to do when exercises aren’t working and how to determine if or when PT is appropriate for you.
This event will take place in the Fitness Room at the Austin Bouldering Project. The seminar is FREE for members. Non-members are welcome with purchase of an ABP Day Pass ($16 adult / $12 youth). This event is limited to a maximum number of 20 participants. Click here for more information.
Pre-Season Baseline Concussion Screenings
Monday, August 27th – 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Wednesday, August 29th – 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Researchers estimate that 5-10% of athletes will experience a concussion in any given sport season. Among children and youth ages 5-18 years, the five leading sports or recreational activities that account for concussions include: bicycling, football, basketball, playground activities, and soccer. Sadly, fewer than 1 in 20 people who sustain a concussion will get the facts they need for proper assessment and treatment.
Concussions can be tricky to diagnose. They are often called “invisible” injuries because they can occur without a loss of consciousness and can happen quickly. For these reasons, a critical first step in properly treating a head injury occurs before a player steps onto the field.
Baseline testing is critical to enable the comparison of an individual’s brain and balance function before and after a suspected concussion. During these community events, Julie Mankinen, PT, OCS, FAAOMPT will be providing 20-minute screenings utilizing industry-standard sideline screening tools that assess aspects of visual function, memory, balance, and coordination. Results of these screens will be provided to participants as a basis for later comparison, should a head injury occur.
Screenings are FREE during these specific events and are appropriate for youth or adults aged 10 and up. To register for a screening time, click here.
