During this unusual pandemic time, Symmetry is acutely aware that some patients with significant health care needs are unable to access services – due to fragile medical conditions or other factors that heighten risk of illness. In light of these challenges, our clinic is now offering the option of a ‘Virtual Visit’ for some types of follow-up care. This type of consultation is targeted towards patients who are elderly, immune compromised, or for another reason are not currently able to come to clinic in person.
A Virtual Visit consists of electronic communication utilizing both visual and audio digital media between an established patient and their physical therapist. A Virtual Visit will typically consist of a 10-20 minute consultation with your physical therapist, during which the therapist can make visual observations of movement and function, ask and answer questions, review and/or demonstrate appropriate activity, and assess the home environment. Further electronic follow-up to a virtual visit could then include modification of discussed relevant updates to a patient’s home program and plan of care. (Check out this link for some tips that can help make a Virtual Visit successful.)
Rules and regulations regarding “telehealth” and insurance coverage of this type of medical service are complicated and variable. Currently, they are also changing literally minute by minute, as the state and national health care systems are attempting to shift gears to adapt to the current fluid pandemic situation. Symmetry is working to keep abreast of the evolving landscape and will be glad to provide information as it becomes available. For the moment, we are happy to answer questions on a case-by-case basis for those that are interested in scheduling a Virtual Visit.
While a Virtual Visit will in no way be able to replace a more comprehensive physical therapy session in the clinic, it is Symmetry’s hope that this type of interaction can assist in maintaining continuity of care for those who are unable to be seen in person during this time. Virtual Visits can enable patients to access professional advice and to adapt management strategies for a variety of health conditions.
